Waveform Distortions from Common Non-linear Loads

Below are waveforms showing that non-linear loads without the proper filters pollute the 60 cycle sine wave. The waveforms were provided by Dave Stetzer, an Industrial Power Quality Specialist from Stetzer Electric in Blair, WI.

Test w5: This was collected with the light controlled by a dimmer switch on full bright with no filter. Channel 1 measuring the 120 VAC. Channel 2 measuring the noise with the 60 cycle removed by the Ubiquitous filter. Scope triggered from channel 1. The waveforms clearly show the RF frequencies riding on the utility 60 cycle power. Notice the high (Off Scale) spikes on channel 2. The position of the spike moved as the switch varied.

Test w6: This was collected with the light half bright with no filter. Channel 1 measuring the 120 VAC. Channel 2 measuring the noise with the 60 cycle removed by the Ubiquitous filter. Scope triggered from channel 1. The waveforms clearly show the RF frequencies riding on the utility 60 cycle power.

Test 2: Laptop plugged in without filter. Channel 1 measuring the 120 VAC. Channel 2 measuring the noise with the 60 cycle removed by the Ubiquitous filter. Scope triggered from channel 1. The waveforms clearly shows the RF frequencies riding on the utility 60 cycle power.
